A Brief History of CAABA
The Clark Atlanta University Booster Club was organized in 1988. This organization was the successor organization to the "C" Club. Unlike the "C" Club whose members were all former male athletes, the Booster Club membership was opened to all alumni and friends of Clark. The purpose of the Booster Club is to provide support to the athletic programs at CAU.
IT WAS DURING THE FIRST year of it’s existence that the Clark Atlanta University Athletics Booster Club (renamed the Clark Atlanta Athletics Booster Association) established the Clark Atlanta University Hall of Fame. One of the Organizers, the late Philip Hood described the inception of this project.
In 1989 Superior Court Judge S. Marvin Arrington, a Clark College alumnus and Clark Atlanta University Trustee, sent a letter to the Booster Club suggesting that we should undertake a Hall of Fame project. In his letter, he listed several things that the organization should present to the Clark Atlanta University Board of Trustees as a proposal. The Board then asked the Boosters to outline the specifics for the Hall of Fame.
Bennie Lowe, Booster Club president assigned an ad hoc committee to comply with the Trustees’ request. This committee was chaired by Philip Hood and included Robert Barksdale, Betty Barksdale, Raymond (Tweet) Williams, Joseph Strawbridge, Barbara Paramore, Ralph Long, Jr., and Gilbert Turman. They operated with the advice and assistance of the University President, Dr. Thomas Cole.
The committee first established policies and procedures for nominating and accepting athletes into the Hall of Fame.
The process was as follows: Any member of the Boosters or any alum could submit a name for nomination. The ad hoc committee became the first selection committee. Anyone that nominated a person had to document his/her nominee’s credentials. At that time, the committee searched the nominee’s record to assure that there was nothing there that would adversely affect the university. The names were then sent to the selection committee, and if the nominee’s documentation passed the scrutiny of the selection committee, then that person was made a Hall of Fame member that year. Those persons who were not accepted during the year they were nominated, could keep their records active for five years. After five years and the nominee was not selected, then the nomination had to be resubmitted and the process begun again.
Since its inception, the Hall of Fame has become a major part of Homecoming activities, with the induction of new members at the annual Hall of Fame Breakfast. Plaques and other memorabilia denoting each member can be seen in the Hall of Fame Room on the third floor of the Leonidas Epps Gymnasium.
The first Hall of Fame Class included Ralph Robinson (coach), Ralph Long, Sr. {tennis and football), Leonidas S. Epps, Jr. (Athletics Director and coach of five different sports), and Laura Demery (basketball).
